Tea Routine: Connection
In 2002, nearly half of UK adults reported feeling lonely at least some of the time1.
Fast forward to today, and despite being more "connected" than ever through technology, loneliness is at an all-time high. More people than ever feel isolated, craving real, meaningful connections.
Let’s take it back a notch…
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Water Element is linked to the kidneys and adrenal glands—powerhouses for managing stress through hormone regulation, particularly cortisol and adrenaline.
When your Water Element is out of balance, anxiety, fear, and fatigue can creep in. Sound familiar? That state where you start to overthink, withdraw, and isolate yourself?
I know this one well—I’m mostly made up of the Water Element. Over the years, I’ve learned to spot the warning signs before they take hold. One of my best tools? Pausing for tea.
Each cup is a moment of awareness, a chance to check in. What do I really need right now? More rest? Movement? Meditation? Or maybe, it's time to reach out—plan a tea date, pop to my local café for some human connection, or simply say hi to a stranger on my walk.
Connection isn’t just nice to have. It’s essential. It impacts our mental health, our well-being, and even our lifespan.
Loneliness is one of the biggest public health challenges we face today—especially among younger adults2. And the health risks? Higher chances of mental health disorders, heart disease, and even a shorter life expectancy.
So here’s your takeaway:
As you pause for your tea today, think of one thing you can do to strengthen your social connections. Engage with your community. Prioritise real conversations. Small moments of connection add up—just like each mindful sip. ☕💙

The joys of volunteering…
This piece in The Guardian by Samuel Burr made my heart sing. It's about how becoming a volunteer telephone friend developed into an authentic, lifelong friendship, and how he's now reaping the rewards. If you'd like to give it a go yourself many charites offer such schemes, like Age UK.
