Tea Routine: The Attention Tea Routine
“Time is money” is a myth.
Because money? You can earn it back.
But time? Time is a one-way trade.
Every hour you give away is a piece of your life.
Not a transaction. A sacrifice.
That extra shift you didn’t need to take?
That late-night scroll that numbed more than it relaxed?
That meeting that drained you, again?
Those were sunrises you missed.
Books you never finished.
Ideas left untended.
Moments with people you love - gone.
So I started doing something simple.
Not complicated. Not productivity-hacked.
Just this:
I created a Tea Routine.
One cup a day. Fully present.
No phone. No multitasking.
Just me, hot tea, and one question:
Am I spending this day the way I want to remember it?
Here’s how it goes:
1. Boil the kettle.
While it heats, I breathe. Four seconds in, six seconds out.
No news. No inbox. Just breath.
2. Choose the tea that fits the moment.
Overwhelmed? Mint or green.
Low mood? Oolong or chai.
Anxious? Chamomile or rooibos.
3. Watch the leaves unfurl.
This is not wasted time. It’s recalibration.
Let the silence speak.
4. Sip slowly. Eyes closed if needed.
Let warmth remind you:
You’re still here. You’re allowed to pause.
5. Ask the question.
Am I trading this day for something that matters?
Because you can’t reclaim time.
But you can reclaim attention.
And with it, your life.
We don’t need to pack more into each day.
We need to pay more attention to the days we’re packing.
So…
Boil the kettle.
Drink the tea.
Ask the question.
Your time deserves that much.

Four Thousand Weeks
’The average human lifespan is absurdly, insultingly brief.
If you live to be 80, you’ll have had about 4,000 weeks. But that’s no reason for despair.
Confronting our radical finitude – and how little control we really have – is the key to a fulfilling and meaningfully productive life.’
