Tea Routine: 5 Steps to ‘No’
In today’s fast-paced world, we often feel pressured to say “yes” to everything, fearing we might disappoint others. But constantly agreeing to things can lead to overwhelm, burnout, and emotional exhaustion.
Learning to say “no” is one of the most powerful tools for protecting your mental and emotional wellbeing. I used to struggle with saying “no,” often agreeing to things that left me feeling drained. But once I started setting healthy boundaries, I realised that saying “no” wasn’t selfish—it was an act of self-care. Every “no” to something that didn’t serve me was a “yes” to things that nourished me, like time for rest or pursuing my passions.
Setting boundaries helps you honour your time and energy, making space for what truly matters. By confidently saying “no” when something doesn’t align with your priorities, you’re protecting your mental and emotional health. Over time, you’ll find it empowering, and your relationships will benefit as well because you’ll show up with more authenticity and presence.
Have you struggled to say “no” lately? You may want to try my 5 step Tea Routine this week:
5 Step Tea Routine for ‘No’
Step 1 – Be Present
As you prepare your tea, take a deep breath and reflect on the commitments you’ve made recently. Are there any that feel draining? Notice how your body reacts—does tension arise? Simply acknowledge these feelings without judgment.
Step 2 – Breathe & Set Intentions
While the kettle boils, practice box breathing: inhale for 4 counts, hold for 4, exhale for 4, hold for 4. As you breathe, silently repeat an affirmation: "I honour my time and energy. I choose commitments that nourish me."
Step 3 – Brew & Reflect
As your tea steeps, think about a recent time you wanted to say “no” but didn’t. What held you back? Imagine how it would have felt to set a clear boundary. Consider one way you can protect your time moving forward.
Step 4 – Sip & Strengthen Your Boundaries
With each sip, visualise yourself confidently saying “no” to something that doesn’t align with your priorities. Feel the warmth of your tea as a reminder that every “no” creates space for something that truly matters.
Step 5 – Ground & Affirm
Before finishing, place your hands around your cup and repeat: "Saying no is an act of self-care. I create space for what matters most." Stretch, take one last deep breath, and carry this intention into your day.
Now, go forward with confidence—your time is valuable!

The ultimate productivity hack…
I agree with James Clear that saying no is the ultimate productivity hack. Saying yes creates future obligations, while no preserves time. We often say yes out of politeness, but it often leads to overwhelm. To prioritise what truly matters, we must master the art of selective no’s—protecting our time, energy, and focus for meaningful commitments.
